If you follow Gabriel Garzón-Montano on Instagram, then you know he's been teasing something in a big way. Over the course of the past week, the Brooklyn-bred artist has been posting mysterious, albeit beautiful, images with the simple caption, "4/18." While it was easy to deduce that the caption referred to April 18th as a release date of something, it was hard to tell exactly what. Was it a new single? A new project? Well now we have to wonder no more as the date has arrived and with it brings a brand spanking new video for "My Balloon."
In the Santiago Carrasquilla-helmed video, we see Garzón-Montano and an afro'd beauty as they go through the motions of a relationship that has run its course. Although at times, they are literally seated directly across from each other, the chasm between them is apparent as they sit in silence. Even as they mimic each other's moves, biting into an apple at the same time, the disconnect is apparent. It continues to be reiterated as the two ride in silence in a speedboat, sometimes staring at one another while at other times avoiding eye contact.
The warmth and intimacy that their romantic Columbian-location should inspire instead feels cold and listless. We're not sure what went wrong or even how their story ends, but the cinematography, coupled with some pretty convincing acting on the part of Garzón-Montano and his counterpart, conveys just enough to let us know that whatever brought them to this point may have been the final chapter for these two. "It's a series of portraits of a heartbroken couple who are in beautiful places at the wrong time,” Gabriel said in a statement. The bittersweet visuals are the perfect accompaniment for "My Balloon" as Garzón-Montano sings about giving his all to someone only to have them slip through his fingers again and again.
The single is the latest taken from his debut full-length album, Jardin. As the buzz continues to build surrounding Garzón-Montano, he is preparing to embark on a multi-city tour that will take him across the U.S. to Canada and Japan. SB fave JMSN will be accompanying him on select dates. You might want to act quickly though; tickets to the L.A. show are already sold out. For ticket information, visit his official website.
